Dusk arrives and I settle into my seat—
a patio chair under the heavens
surrounded by gardens and shrubbery
backing into the shadows. As light dims
and easy-listening harmonies quiet,
a cardinal announces the show’s commencing.
Cicadas buzz with electricity
as fireflies take the stage
executing
flirty blips
show-offy lines—
lights of temptation.
Elsewhere
an audience
holds lighters aflicker
begging for more.
