First Fall

The mist rises from the warm October river.
Early sun ignites the maple.
Not a single leaf has fallen yet.

Then its first gold flame tumbles.
A second is followed by the next,
one after another, in slow-motion descent––

as the death-rustle

of what began
begins to end.
